DDJ 200 Headphone Cue Issue

I'b brand new to DJ'ing and have my DDJ200 controller setup on my Macbook Air and running Rekordbox. I set it up by plugging the USB from the controller into my Macbook and using the built in speakers of my laptop as the master sound source. I want to plug my apple headphones into the laptop to use to pre cue tracks but I cant get it to work. Every time I plug the headphones into the laptop the sound just comes out of the headphones and not the laptop. Obviously in time I will buy some speakers but for now I'd like to use it just with my laptop and headphones, is there any way around this? I think I've read every forum post going and they all use the splitter cable with speakers but I didn't think it would be a neccesity to have speakers and headphones just to pre cue tracks.

I hope this all makes sense and if you have any advice it would be very much appreciated
