I currently have the RCA analog output working fine from the DJM-900NSX2 but wanted to use the mixers digital output in to the AVR-3080 digital input.

So far it's not working - I've fiddled about and tried changing the sampling frequency in the mixers utility settings with no joy - just silence.

Are there any tips on things that may need to be checked and configured on the Denon 3808 side?

Looking at the owner's manual, it does support 2ch linear PCM, but you'll need to make sure it's in DIRECT mode and the decode is set to PCM:
