I'm having the exact same problem. The DDJ SX is connected to my MacBookPro with a USB cable that I know to be in working order. I start the DDJ SX while holding down the shift and sync keys. The volume meters flash. I let go. When I run the Java app it says my DDJ SX is not connected.
I've rebooted. I've tried doing things in different orders. I've tried with the Serato DJ software running and with it not running. I've tried re-running the Java app. I've turned the unit off and on. Nothing works.
Please follow the download instructions and update procedure as described here:

If your issues persist, please report back with your OS and whatever issues you are encountering.
I am still unable to get it to realize my DDJ-SX is connected. Furthermore:
After posting, I took the unit to the store where I bought it, and the shopkeep was able to get a computer in the store to recognize the DDJ-SX and upgrade it.
However, my DDJ-SX came with an issue with the pads on the right side. Sometimes they'd begin looping unexpectedly at random points while a song was playing. I had the unit sent back for repair. Pioneer couldn't fix it, so they sent me a brand new DDJ-SX.
The new one has older firmware, but when I try to upgrade using the .jar file I get the same error-- "my DDJ SX is not connected." But it is. I'd rather not truck it down to the shop. Can anyone offer any advice?
@Greg Gioia, The best Solutions is Upgrade your OS to the lastest version or simply reformat or factory restore your os as new brand. then install back the the missing pluggins needed for the firmware and it will work for sure. :) Hope so u try it rather than other might rob ur money ... i also aware that there are many bug with ddj-sx controller, with mic, platter etc.. but this time the issue is 100% from your notebook.
Thank
Regards.

@Greg > Please ensure your Mac software is up to date before connecting the SX and then try the upgrade. If that fails to work, and if you have access to a Windows laptop, then please try that (ensuring drivers etc are up to date from here: http://pioneerdj.com/support/product.php?lang=en&p=DDJ-SX&t=179).
Please let us know if this works for you.
