DJM-S5 FX and control signal issues

I recently purchased a DJM-S5 and I'm having issues with the FX and control signals. I pair the S5 with Phase and I get sound (tracks to play) when connected using the "Wireless" setting on each deck. However, when I enable an effect using the paddle, it turns the sound off of the track that is playing (the track keeps playing in Serato, just no sound). I can see in the Serato DJ FX on my laptop that the effect that I turned on is in fact on. 

Also, when I use Phase, I don't see any rings appear in the control signal boxes in the settings.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
