Moving Your Rekordbox Database to External

if i move my rekordbox database over to a external hard drive does that take my music off my laptop and move it to the hard drive or does it make a copy . i just want to make sure that its not taking my music off my laptop because i use that music also for other programs .

Thanks.

No, it does not move your music.  It just moves the Rekordbox database file.

thanks just wanted to make sure.

One of the primary reasons you would want to put your database on an external device is because that's also where the music is stored, providing you the ability to move that database AND music collection from computer to computer easily.

The database itself isn't large, is there a reason you would want to have it separated from the music?

Pulse this is an interesting topic here is my application. I have two Mac laptops one is a 15" one is a 11"

i use the 15" in my studio the 11" I use to DJ - smaller portable etc. how would you recommend I set would my rekordbox library granted I have about 80gb of music? Would you recommend an external drive and rekordbox software on both computers?

I'm a dj &Vdj and i use audio files along with video files some times to remix . i have all my mp3 analyzed with rekordbox for when i just use my cdj and i have a very large mp3 music folder and just kinda sick of always putting music on a small usb stick for gigs and want to just put all on to a 1tb because of the new cdi 2000nxs2 . but still need all the mp3 to stay on my laptop for when i vdj . i like the ideal of bing able to work on my rekordbox music with other computers it would make life easier

Pulse I also asked another question off topic and can't find it about the DDJ RX and SX2 mapping. There is no Flip in Rekordbox so I believe this would replace the capture keys?

I have seen some lag with my XDJ 1000 with a 128GB USB, I am not sure if an external drive would be any different, in some cases I have crashed the XDJ and had to reboot it I am not sure if it was ment to read that many songs off a thumb drive or external drive.

A suggestion to the developers.

Microsoft onedrive offers 1 TB of datastorage. Place your music and database on Microsoft onedrive and heypresto. All your music is safe in the cloud.

This is assuming the club has internet access and wifi.

I however have my music and database on an external drive. It works well.

Funny I tried this - Kinda. I have a 2 TB Drive with MS. I really never use it but when testing different MS Windows 10 Boxes I thought this would make complete sense to store a virtual record collection then when going from MFR to MFR etc I found this virtual library of sorts would crash. None of the MS related documents, spreadsheets, power points (even with imbedded graphics and video) had any issues, but get to that music and it broke every time! I also tried it with different size libraries (16, 32, 64, 128) and nothing.

now I know Pulse is gonna chime in and say something robotic like it's not supported but to be clear Pulse I am not talking about rekordbox I am talking about Microsoft and just getting some sort of Library (not 1 or two or 50 songs) to work and sync.

i didn't have this problem on Mac but I don't have a 2 TB virtual drive with them - Granted I do with MS through My Mac but it does not work - same problem.

i am now focusing on the usb/sd testing and have been having pretty good luck but I can't get pulse to give me an answer on going from Mac to Mac with a library on usb/sd.
