Using AUX

I see how to connect and adjust levels with AUX input.

But I can't get any further.

Does anyone use this?

I imagine connecting a phone or laptop (from headphone sockets) and playing from there.

What is the process? After connecting where do I select AUX as my input? (I assume volume is controlled form external device).
