Hi

I am looking at buying an XDJ from the states and I was wondering if would be ok to use in the UK, with either swapping the power cord for a UK one with a standard UK plug or be better using the US cable with a plug converter?

Should be fine to just use a standard IEC cable. As far as I know the PSU in the R1 is a standard switching 110/240V, but as always check the manual first!
