Hi, 

Ive got a djm400 and im bored of the efx on it now. I want to be able to do more, but unfortunately price is a problem. Any suggestions on an efx unit which I can use with a djm400?

There's no reason why you can't use an EFX-1000.  Just run the master output from the DJM into the EFX, then run the output from the EFX into your sound system.  Easy!

Surely that would effect the whole signal though? I'm looking to effect individual channels...

@PETE > Correct; you'd have to connect it between a deck and the mixer to get a single channel for your current configuration.  The other options are buy another mixer with a S/R loop or buy 2 EFX units.
