Nightmare trying to get one turntable like i used to have just to do cuts over my beats

Hey everyone, brand new here/. I have a Pioneer CDJ800-MK2,  a Numark SCRATCH mixer (gigantic, simply because I was told this aut-unlocks serato DJ Pro and no matter how I hook it up,  I jud end update with the electric tone (like the hook from Gang Starr - Code of the Streets.

Would I be better off getting the core version of Rekordbox???   Like i said I just wanted to practive scratching, get back good at it and record it as choruses fo my songs.\\
