Recording Parameters Using Rekordbox
Hello AplhaTheta,
My questions here are related to recording using Performance Mode in Rekordbox. There are many information scattered throughout the forum regarding this, and hopefully this thread could summarize everything up into one single thread.
From what I can gather, here are some functions which needs to be adjusted in relation to recording your set, and I hope you could clarify any misunderstandings.
1. Autogain (Preferences > Controller > Mixer)
If the box is checked, rekordbox will try to guesstimate the appropriate trim level of the tracks to match the overall level of the whole recording?
2. Automatically optimize audio level of a recorded file (Preferences > Controller > Recordings)
- By optimizing, does it mean normalizing the volume? (Amplifying the highest peak to a certain dBfs)
- What is the parameter, does it amplify to 0 dBfs?
- Does this behave exactly the same compared to when using amplify/normalize in DAWs?
3. Headroom (Preferences > Controller > Mixer)
- Automatically apply limiter on any peaks beyond the headroom level?
4. Recording Level Knob (under Rec Panel in performance mode)
- If it's at 12 o'clock position, does it function exactly like a REC OUT on a DJM? Will adjusting the master volume (through controller for example) affect the volume of the recording?
- If it's less than 12 o'clock position, does it behave by reducing the overall volume of both channels?
for example: both channels' trims are adjusted so the peaks of each channel only reach the first orange level, if this knob is at 9 o'clock position, how much reduction of levels will this have on the final recording file.
Would be really appreciated if you could provide a guideline to set this up especially in relation to headroom vs recording level knob.
Will this achieve the same result:
A. Headroom is set to NONE. Recording Level Knob at 9 o'clock position.
B. Headroom is set to -9dB. Recording Level Knob at 12 o'clock position
Trims set to 11 o'clock position to target max. 2 orange levels throughout the recordings.
Of course I can always experiment by recording under different parameters, but having a more precise guideline would certainly produce consistency across different mixtapes.
Please note that the final product will then ideally have enough headroom to be mastered further in DAWs.
Thanks for your help.
