Software and Hardware not connecting

I just bought the DDJ-FLX4, all buttons light up when I hook to my windows laptop.

I have downloaded btoh rekordbox and serato lite and can get neither of them to work to go onto the hardware. Every single video I can find the controller is hooked up and working already and is more about the features and not about how to get the system to work, and it seems as though it should be plug and play once you have the software. I read there are no drivers needed so what am I missing? Please help, I have spent hours watching videos and troubleshooting what might be wrong.
