Add pre-fader master cue option
Hello!
I know the request has been declined before, but I'd like you to reconsider adding an option (can be off by default) to switch the master cue on the mixers to pre-fader.
This was discussed earlier in https://forums.pioneerdj.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/203036349. However, I find the reasons for declining it not entirely valid, while I do have reasons for this feature to exist.
I see 2 general scenarios where DJs play:
- Festivals, bigger raves and clubs. The master out will always go to some sound engineer who will take care of the volume in the room. You can probably turn both the channels and the master up to 0-ish or a little higher. Channels and master levels roughly match and all is fine. The sound engineer will trim it back down before sending to the amplifiers.
- Smaller clubs or "less professional events". You are very likely to end up in the situation of the OP of the other thread where you are not able to drive the master high enough. Probably no sound engineer is watching you and the DJ mixer might even be directly hooked up to the amplifiers. The difference between channel and master levels in this scenario is too big to comfortably mix, even with the cue/master knob.
The arguments given for having the master cue post-fader are to prevent accidental bumping and keeping an eye on the main room volume.
I must say that with the master being a knob all the way at the top right on modern mixers (not a fader like in the old days) I've never come even close to accidentally bumping it.
Then for keeping an eye on the room volume: in the cases where there is a sound engineer it's not that big of a deal. In the case of the small club you probably just set your rough level, start mixing, then from time to time take your headphones off for a second to check in. In either case you can always still see the LEDs.
Of course it's possible to attenuate the master, but on some (if not most) mixers this setting is only accessible in the settings menu by restarting the mixer completely. Often there is no time for that if you're not the first DJ to play.
So all in all I find the room volume issue much less of a problem than being unable to mix accurately on smaller events, and a small toggle switch would solve all that.
Offtopic: Maybe also provide an option to exclude the microphone from the master cue so you don't hear the MC blaring through your headphones. Said small events often hook up the MC directly to the DJ mixer.
