Rekordbox 6.8.6 Workflow Question: Preview from iTunes library and Best Way to handle song requests without external SSD dependency
Hi everyone, I am using Rekordbox 6.8.6 on Mac and I am trying to design a very specific and reliable workflow for DJing with an external music library.
All of my music is managed in Apple Music and stored on an external SSD in the default Music folder structure. However, ...
Current setup (already working)
I have a subset of my music that I have curated using tags and comments and have been placed in the appropriate playlists. Those tracks have been copied into a folder on my internal drive (no SSD dependency) and are imported into Rekordbox Collection. This part of my workflow is working well and is what I normally use for planned sets.
New use case I am trying to solve
The issue is with unexpected situations during a live set.
Sometimes I get special requests from people during a set. Those requested songs are often not in my curated internal DJ folder, but they exist in my Apple Music library on the external SSD.
What I want to achieve in these cases is:
- Be able to preview the requested track inside Rekordbox (via the iTunes All Audio interface)
- By Previewing, I can decide wether to play it or not to ensure it fits with my currently planned set
- Locate the file via "Show In Finder" (which I already have a shortcut key set up)
- Copy it from the external SSD to a folder on my internal drive (that can be seen in the Explorer View)
- Import it into Rekordbox Collection from the internal drive by selecting Import into Collection (for example, from within the Explorer View)
- Play it from the internal drive so that there is no dependency on the SSD during the set
The goal is reliability. I want to ensure that even if the SSD disconnects or fails during a set, playback is not affected because Rekordbox is only using internal drive files.
Questions
1) Is there a way to Preview a Song within iTunes → All Audio without having to Load into Deck or Import into Collection? I ask this because as soon as I do any of these two, the location of the song points to the song in the SSD. I also noticed that if I move the song to Tag List, it also imports it including the analysis of the song.
2) Is there a better or more native way to preview tracks from an Apple Music library before deciding to move them?
Thanks for your time!
