XDJ R1 won’t play anything at all - beginner

I’m a beginner so I’m hoping this is going to be something that I’m doing wrong and easily fixed. Just bought a second hand XDJ R1. Set up according to instructions, amplifier, power, rekordbox etc. I followed instructions from the manual to set up wireless connection to my laptop. Couldn’t get anything to even recognise it was connected on the controller. I use Beatport link, so also ran into the problem that I couldn’t stream music at the same time as being connected this way as it took over my WiFi connection. Even when I tried to played mp3s from hard drive still nothing though. Tried the usb cable that came with it that went into the back of the controller to my Mac usb.. Computer seemed to recognise that it was connected because it gave me an option to play sound through either laptop or XDJ in top right of rekordbox.. not that I could get it to. On the controller the only sign it was connected was ‘PC’ in the top right of display. Midi button kept flashing. Nothing playing through speakers but then I plugged my headphones into the front and could hear it playing, but had no control over it on the XDJ it was just coming through the laptop. Tried putting music onto usb drive... recognises it’s plugged in but brings up no tracks, just goes blank. This was a hard drive I use for other things though not sure if that matters. Still exported correctly in rekordbox. Checked that firmware, software and firewall aren’t issues. Went through all the pioneer FAQs. Just seems to get more and more complicated to a point I think it can’t be right. Surely I’m just doing something wrong because I’m inexperienced, do I need some sort of different cable or have I got a dodgy XDJ? I basically just thought I’d have my laptop open with rekordbox box n be able to toggle through the collection with the controller while mixing. I’d read that’s what other do with this model to see the waveforms.

Tara,

Unless you have purchased a rekordbox 6 subscription, the XDJ-R1 does not automatically unlock the capacity to perform as a controller for the software.

See this page for information on supported devices.

Ok so I’ve signed up for a subscription. Plugged my laptop into the back by USB.. still nothing. The midi button just flashes, display says midi control deck A, doesn’t show any track info and nothing on the controller lights up and I can’t control anything with it (can’t press play or pause or do anything). Nothing comes though the speakers but it’s coming through my headphones at the front?

Tara,

No information is shown on the display of the R1 when in use with rekordbox, so that's normal.

Can you please post a screenshot of the audio preferences within rekordbox?

Tara Nicole Warren

I've now got the USB stick working.

Whatever I'm playing in rekordbox on the laptop comes through the speakers now, but I can't mix or control anything with the controller.

Tara Nicole Warren

Hi, can someone get back to me please? I can only use a USB stick. When I plug the laptop in Rekordbox recognises that its connected but the controller just flashes the midi button and doesn't let me use anything to select or control the tracks. Is there a setting I need to change?

Pulse

@Tara > When you connect the R1, and press the MIDI button, you'll be prompted on each deck display to connect to rekordbox. Do you not see that?

Tara Nicole Warren

No, when I connect it rekordbox seems to know it’s connected to the R1. The R1 switches from ‘not connected’ to ‘midi control deck a/b’ and the midi button flashes. Nothing happens when I touch the toggle, info, time back or anything anywhere else on the decks for that matter. If I press play on rekordbox the track plays through the speakers connected to the R1, I can control the volume using the master level but that’s the only thing I can control; no eq, start/cue, tempo - just nothing from anything like that?

Are you possibly in EXPORT mode? Look at the top left of the rekordbox window; if it says EXPORT, click that and change it to PERFORMANCE.

Tara Nicole Warren

Hi, no, performance mode. but I've tried both

Click the MIDI button at the top of the rekordbox window - you should see the XDJ-R1 appear as the name of the device in the window, then click DEFAULTS; it will ask if you want to save, click no, and it will reset the MIDI commands.

The other thing to check is that you've activated your plan on the MY PAGE panel.

Tara Nicole Warren

Brilliant! That’s fixed it. Thanks!

Pulse

Which was it, the MIDI defaults or the plan activation?

Tara Nicole Warren

I think the plan activation, but I reset the midi just incase too

Pulse

Awesome - enjoy!
