Rekordbox Track Analysis

Hey guys

Yesterday I played a gig with CDJ's. Therefore I wanted to analyze my tracks with Rekordbox. I imported my folders into Rekordbox. After RB had analyzed all tracks I exported them to my USB. A folder automatically was created with the name PIONEER with several other folders in it (Artwork, CDJ, MPJ, rekordbox, USBANLZ + MYSETTING.DAT & djprofile.nxs).

I also added my mp3 files to the USB.

When I put in my USB into the CDJ's the CDJ's found not a single analyzed track. I had to play without any beat's/beatgrids etc and the bmp which was automatically analyzed by the CDJ's during playing a track changed all the time. This was not amusing..

What went wrong with the analysis??

I appreciate your help!

If you want to put music on the USB drive separate of the rekordbox exports, you need to browse them through the [FOLDERS] item on the CDJ menu. There you can browse all the unanalyzed music you dumped on the drive.

"I also added my MP3 filed to the USB" -> if you sync your playlist (export) the MP3 files are automatically added to the USB.  Why do you add them again?

think Christophe is right, by adding them again, the informations of beatgrids etc were lost, you simply were not able to find your prepared lists, instead, you were using the last added tracks for your gig. Try to sync only by program (RB), should be fine.

After exporting the tracks I checked the USB for mp3 files. I saw there are only the rekordbox files I mentioned above in the fractions. So I thought if there are only files with ending like .nxs etc. I better add the original mp3 files as well. So this was one step to much? The rekordbox files are enough?

Strange, when you export your playlists (with the sync manager) your music files are automatically exported to that usb drive too.  The PIONEER folder as you mention it, is everything that Rekordbox has analysed and so on. But there's also a Contents folder next to the PIONEER folder.  In that Contents folder, all your music files are stored.

There's nothing strange about wanting to keep your mp3 files in a folder and be unmolested by rekordbox. It's bad enough we are forced to use rekordbox for analysis at all. I'm currently struggling with an issue where the only copy of my new music is on a USB I exported to and there's multiple genres. So if I fish each file out of the nested directories with a utility, they are all mixed up. If you just let people keep their folders together it would have been better. Seriously. What a stupid design. I've seen countless complaints about this across the web and pioneer is silent. Just export to playlist you say. NO. I WANT THEM IN A FOLDER SO I CAN DJ ON MORE THAN JUST PIONEER THANKS. I understand you're trying to corner the market but it's at the customer's expense. If I want my music in a folder also it takes double the space and it's not analyzed. It's ANNNNNNOOOYYYINGG.

Rekordbox doesn't "molest" the original music files.   The songs are stored in /CONTENT and extra information is added in /PIONEER folder.  The analysis, cue points, waveform etc. are stored in a seperate file, not integrated in the .mp3.  Only tag information which you adjust to songs in rekordbox, are stored in the .mp3 file itself.

You're also not obliged to use rekordbox, you can just make a USB with folders and paste .mp3, but your missing on a lot.

What rekordbox does, is create a TOC (table of content), so that a CDJ/XDJ immediatly, knows all songs that are on this memory, you can sort on bpm, playlists very fast and have waveform and cue points available immediatly.  That simply is not technically possible if you just plunge in a USB key with 2000 songs on it without it being analysed by rekordbox before.

I disagree. I'm a programmer. There's no reason at all for taking MP3s and destroying a user's organization within a file system to cause dependence on an application via use of nested directories other than to prevent sellf perpetuated organization and non-dependance of rekord box software.

I understand the business model. I'm just talking about the elephant in the room and telling what it is. Not useful. If I were to not accept the unnecessary, confusing, unusable, need for nested directories when you can't even make sense of it without a database that knows where the files are without nesting, then sure. But I don't, especially when a sync program or hard drive failure kills my music back up. It's nice to know that Pioneer is making life hell in that dpt. I know iTunes did the same thing. What's the difference? DJs are a tad more technical than your average booshy iPad user.

I understand inhibiting piracy, but what about your users?

It's molestation. There's no option to analyze and leave the file where it is. No option to keep playlists in a folder. None of that. And it could be, but it's not. I want my shit in a folder, where I left it. In my not so humble opinion, I'm mad I even have to run shit through the program in the first place.

Don't make excuses for the method. You know exactly what I'm talking about.

I'm also particularly annoyed because in a normal situation I'd of had a backup plan when file sync went wrong and I have multiple backups and a NAS in my home. I have to write a friggin script to un-nest all the files and then I can't separate them by playlist, because even if I were to write an SQL script to scrape the data. The device SQL db is PW protected. This is fuckery, my friend. And I've wasted plenty of time on it. Is it really my fault that I don't want to eat double space on my drive by keeping playlist and music collections in folders and then being forced to store it twice with an annoying, and particularly unnecessary nested file structure that promotes the use of the software?

Sorry @Zeek, an analyse-in-place system (ala Serato) is something I've asked for since day 1, but that's not what we have, so there's not much we can do.

@Zeek is right. I have a DDJ-XR and today I demo'ed the XDJ-XR2 and I used a USB stick that had an exported playlist from Rekordbox and also a separate folder with some MP3s that I wanted to use to test how it functions with tracks NOT exported from Rekordbox.

Safe to say that if you use Rekordbox first you don't have a problem but if you don't want to use Rekordbox you're pissing in the wind! The waveforms do not show so it makes it much more difficult to play.

As Zeek mentioned this is an obvious attempt to get users to use Rekordbox first to prepare everything.. I don't see why we can't just copy our tracks to our memory sticks and play?! I know it may take a little longer to see the waveform and analyse but even my old CDJ1000MK2's analysed tracks on the fly!

If I've got the XDJ-XR2 at a house party I am damn sure I will get other DJs coming up to me with their memory sticks wanting to have a mix and I can't be sure they will use Rekordbox first, not everyone is that organised!

I wanted to move from the DDJ to the XDJ so I was not tied to my laptop as much when mixing, seems Pioneer found a way to tie me to my laptop in a different way.

This is seriously stupid Pioneer please listen to your users.
