ddj sr stuck in update mode (time sensitive, please help)

I tried to update the firmware from 1.07 to 1.08 and followed the instructions perfectly. When I run the update I get the error message "DDJ-SR controller is not connected". I changed the usb cable just to make sure that wasn't it, restarted everything and same message. Now I just want to go back to using my controller in 1.07 because I have a gig in 2 days but it's stuck in update mode!

What OS is on your computer?

Tony Rodio

Latest version of Java is installed.

Let's see if your computer recognizes the unit first...

  1. With the unit powered-on and connected via USB, open the System Report by click the Apple icon > About this Mac > System Report.
  2. In the left pane, click Hardware (if not already open) > USB.
  3. On the right, look for the DDJ-SR and click it to see if the details are provided.

If it does NOT appear, you can try three things... first, reboot and see if it is detected. Second, simply try using a different USB cable. Finally, you can also try resetting the SMC on your computer.

If none of those work to show the SR in your devices list, then it's possible the SR has failed and would require servicing, but let me know if any of that works for you.

Tony Rodio

It's there, although version now shows 0.01 instead of 1.07

It could simply show 0.01 because it's already in export mode.

Can you try connecting it to the other port to update?

Tony Rodio

If you mean other usb port on my MacBook, just tried that and same result.

Pulse

Are the channel meters blinking immediately when you connect the USB cable? Or does it perform the boot sequence "light show" first?

Tony Rodio

meters are blinking immediately.

Pulse

Are you pressing and holding the shift+sync when you're connecting it?

Tony Rodio

I did that the first time but since it's already stuck in update mode it doesn't seem to make a difference. I've tried it both ways in the troubleshooting process.

Pulse

Regardless of it being "stuck" in that mode, I'd like you to please try holding the buttons again while connecting it to see if it will accept the update. From the only other time I've encountered this issue, the user was finally able to get his SR to update after several tries.

Tony Rodio

I've tried it about a dozen times that way and just did it one more.

I've been trying to resolve this for over 2 hours now. I have 2 gigs this weekend and am starting to panic a little now.

Pulse

You could try using the SMC reset (above), or try using a different computer. Let me know if you're able to get it to update.

Tony Rodio

That did nothing.

Can you please just tell me how to get it out of update mode?

Tony Rodio

Everywhere I research this it looks like this has been going on for years with no resolution or fix.

Pulse

The only way to get it out of update mode is to complete the update. It would seem your SR did not (for whatever reason).

I've messaged our product team to see if they can recommend a solution for this.

Can you please just tell me how to get it out of update mode?

Pulse

As I said, the only (usual) way is to have the firmware update process flag itself as completed 100%, but clearly that hasn't happened, so I've emailed the product engineers in Japan to see if there is another option. Thanks for your patience.

Hi- any luck resolving this? I am having the same exact issue! Except I am running catalina 10.15. Please advise, thanks!

Tony Rodio

I never resolved the issue and Pioneer was never able to help. I called one of their recommended service centers and was advised by a technician that it probably wasn't worth sending in for repair. He said it could be that the main board failed and would need to be replaced and would cost more than it's worth. I ended up having to buy a new controller (DDJ-SR2). It sucks because my controller was working perfectly before I tried to update it, and I did the update process exactly as instructed by Pioneer. I've ben a loyal Pioneer user for years and am disappointed in how they handled it.

Matheus Matos

Hi tony, did you got any update on this? Im having the exactly same problem, I ran the firmware update, but at the end it showed me the message your DDJSR is not connected. Since then the controller is stuck in the update mode with channel lights flashing, but whenever I attempt to install the firmware again it says that the ddjsr is not connected. I dont know what to do

Pulse

@Matheus > A few things to try...

1) A different USB cable

2) A different USB port

3) A different computer

If all of those things still fail, please contact a Pioneer DJ authorized service centre in your region to have your DDJ inspected and/or repaired.

Hi Tony i have exactly the same problem. I tried to update from 1.07 to 1.08 and now my controller is stuck in the Update mode, meaning the levels are blinking. I'm very frustrated since the controller costed me 400 Euro...

Who can help ?

Tony Rodio

Well you would think it would be one of the experts at Pioneer DJ but apparently not. They are monitoring this forum and see everyone's comments. Honestly if they don't see a recurring problem here then I don't know what else to say.

Hey guys i fixed mine yesterday. I got only different Mac's at home and with them i wasnt able to fix the problem. So yesterday i asked a friend with a windows to help me and it finally worked out. I'm very happy.

Just wanted to let you know !

Michael Long

In case anyone is still having this issue - seems to be mac related. Update froze on my MBP and couldn't do anything to fix it. Plugged it into my windows desktop and the update ran perfectly, unit seems to be working again as normal. Pioneer should definitely look into this issue and create a fix for mac users - for anyone that isn't running windows this could leave your unit unusable.

Pulse

The Mac updater does work fine - it could be that your device is blocked by the macOS security, thus not allowing access to the hardware for the firmware update.
