I had a drive, and selected guid partition by accident, but when i try and erase the disk in disk utility it says error can't un mount.

 

any ideas how to just flat out erase this usb back to its factory standard so i can start again?

Make sure you have the view set to show all devices (at the top left):

And when you go to format, select the top-most item of the branch for that drive.
